Blended learning in adult education: Great for learners and educators alike

July 23rd, 2024 - Learning Design - Elizabeth Asbury

In the dynamic world of adult education, where time is a precious commodity and engagement is key, blended learning emerges as a beacon of hope. As a seasoned learning designer, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of blending online learning with traditional classroom-based instruction. This approach not only benefits adult learners but also brings substantial advantages to educators and institutions. Let's dive into the world of blended learning and explore why it holds immense potential for revolutionising adult education.

What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning, also known as hybrid learning, is an educational approach that combines online digital media with traditional face-to-face classroom methods. It integrates the best of both worlds, offering learners the flexibility of online learning alongside the invaluable personal interaction and support found in traditional settings. This model allows for a more personalised, engaging, and effective learning experience, catering to the diverse needs of adult learners.

Time-Poor Adult Learners and Education Providers

Time is a luxury many adult learners simply do not have. Between juggling work, family, and other responsibilities, finding the time to attend traditional classes can be a daunting task. Blended learning offers a solution by providing the flexibility to access course materials and complete assignments online at their own pace. This means learners can study during their commute, in the quiet hours of the night, or whenever they find a spare moment.

For education providers, this flexibility extends beyond just accommodating learners’ schedules. It allows institutions to reach a broader audience, including those who might not have been able to attend in-person classes due to geographical or time constraints. Moreover, it enables educators to manage their time more effectively, focusing their efforts where it truly matters – in providing quality, personalised support and guidance.

Cost Reduction through Reduced Face-to-Face Teaching Time

One of the significant advantages of blended learning is its potential to reduce costs. By shifting a portion of the teaching online, the need for physical classroom space and associated resources is decreased. This can lead to substantial savings for educational institutions.

Furthermore, educators can prepare a library of links and create online modules that can be reused across different cohorts. This not only saves time but also ensures consistency in the delivery of content. The reduced need for physical presence allows educators to invest more time in refining their teaching materials, supporting learners individually, and staying updated with the latest advancements in their field.

Enhancing Engagement and Enjoyment in the Classroom

Let's face it, some topics are less thrilling than others. Blended learning allows us to move these less engaging elements out of the classroom and into the online space. This frees up valuable face-to-face time for interactive, hands-on activities that foster deeper understanding and retention of knowledge.

When learners come to workshops or face-to-face sessions, they are more engaged and ready to participate actively because they have already covered the foundational material online. This not only makes the learning experience more enjoyable and effective for students but also enhances the teaching experience for educators. When educators witness their students actively engaging and applying their knowledge, it reignites their passion for teaching and reinforces the value of their efforts.

Elizabeth Asbury (PhD, MSc, BSc Hons)

Elizabeth has been working in online learning for so long that the vacant stares and looks of pity from ‘traditional’ educators have become a distant memory. Thanks to the early adopters and revolutionary thinkers who understood that online learning was about equity and accessibility, no longer is mentioning eLearning akin to screaming into the void. Her Ph.D in Psychology, post-doc research, and years of working in tertiary and vocational education certainly helped prepare Elizabeth for the fight to bring the amazing opportunities online learning can offer to the widest possible audience.
